Chris Pirillo of former TechTV fame and creator of LockerGnome has made the big switch from windoze to Mac. He posts 50 Reasons why he made the move to Mac and states, Once You Go Mac, You Never Go Back.
I bought the new Mac Keyboard this weekend. I like the new metallic chicklet keyboard design it feels easier to type on than the older keyboard where the keys had to be pressed down. I guess it depends on your preference how you like to type, just tapping the keys or press down on the keys. The new keyboard is also much lighter and smaller so I have a little more room on the desk. Here are some photos I took comparing the new Mac Keyboard to the older Mac Keyboard.
I recently added another Gig of RAM to my iMac. I have one of the original Intel iMacs that has an Intel Core Duo not Core 2 Duo. It came with 500 MB of RAM and now I've added an additional 1 Gig so it's up to 1.5 Gigs. Makes the UI and programs more responsive especially when many programs are open at the same time. =)
If you're looking to upgrade or replace the RAM on your iMac Apple has a great support page describing what type of RAM to buy and how to install it. It's actually very simple compared to a PC where you have to open up the whole box and find the RAM slots. While there may not be as much customization on the hardware as PCs, what can be upgrade is very easy to do compared to PCs, another reason to like Macs. Basically the steps are you shutdown the iMac, unplug the power and cables, place the iMac face down on a flat soft/smooth surface (be careful not to scratch the screen), unscrew the 2 screws on the bottom center, pull the ejector clips to the open position, slide in the new RAM (give it a push until it's firmly inserted but don't push too hard), close the ejector clips, screw the panel back on, bootup the iMac and check About This Mac to make sure your RAM is recognized. Here are some photos I took of the process.
Earlier this week I setup a new MacBook at work for the use of testing compatibility with new devices from Nokia. The MacBook hardware purchased is the 13 inch, Black model (matches the ThinkPads already spread around the office), with 2 Gigs of RAM. For setting it up created the username and password, connected it to the office WiFi, logged in, and updated OSX 10.4.9 to the latest 10.4.10 applying the latest security patches. All this is done with ease on the Mac. The next step was a new one for me though, I used BootCamp to install Windows Vista. While this was something I hadn't done before on a Mac I am familiar with setting up dual boot PC systems with windoze and GNU/Linux on separate partitions. Apple's BootCamp is another excellent demonstration of Apple making things easy for the user even though the software is in Beta. BootCamp walks you through each step and includes some easy to follow directions. One of the best things it does is burn a CD or DVD with the drivers for the Mac hardware before partitioning the drive! Now that is really convenient. BootCamp also has nondestructive partition creation and resizing. Installing Vista took the most time out of the installation process as I expected, not only that but Vista boots and shuts down slooow compared to OSX. As I mentioned earlier the MacBook has 2 Gigs of RAM, the 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and has the drivers for Vista installed but Windows Vista sure doesn't improve on the speed performance when compared to OSX or XP.
One of the most common questions about running windows on a MacBook is how do you right click?
Curiously enough the answer is pressing Shift - F10 at the sametime will right click on MacBook with windows. Control (CTRL) + Click does not work.
For those of you that want to use a Mac in your work office but your manager is giving you a difficult time about the purchase you can use the major cost saving as justification. The cost savings is having just one computer with both Mac OSX and Windows Vista installed, then you are only paying for one hardware for both operating systems instead of 2 separate computers! Of course it helps if your work already uses a Mac even a little and remember you'll have to buy a copy of Windows then also.
An awesome Mac or PC Music video/song is available from MacOrPC.org check it out!
The iPod video version plays nicely on a Nokia N95. =)
I found the song thanks to Net@Nite episode 25.
Camino 1.5 has been released for download. New features include RSS/Atom Feed detection, Spell Checking in forms, Window/Tab Session Saving, Improved Tabbed browsing, and other new features that can be enabled in the Preferences. I've updated from Camino 1.0.4 and the new features are great! The Camino browser can be downloaded from their website here. It runs on Mac OSX 10.3 and 10.4. Support for Mac OSX 10.2 has been dropped.
I went to the Apple Store today in Ginza, Tokyo to see if AppleTV was available and what kind of demos were being shown. The store had about 5 AppleTVs setup repeatedly playing the AppleTV trailer. They were only there on display though since the remotes were hidden somewhere not accessible to customers. Also there was one AppleTV added to the front display repeatedly playing the same trailer. It is interesting to see Apple selling the AppleTV in Japan since the iTunes Japan Store does not have any TV Shows or full length movies available. The only videos available in Japan from iTunes are music videos, movie trailers, and a few Pixar short films. Probably a main reason why they have released it for sale in Japan is because HiDef TVs are increasingly being sold in Japan.
On a slightly different topic the release of AppleTV is a good opportunity for Video podcasters to promote their videos so that AppleTV buyers have more videos available to watch.
You might be asking, Did I buy an AppleTV?
The answer is no I didn't buy one, the main reasons being I do not have an HDTV and don't use iTunes for downloading or playing videos.
Here are some photos taken with the Nokia N93i of the AppleTV in Ginza, Tokyo.
