I'm flying from Narita over to NY today, that is quite a long flight (12+ hours!) to spend the next 2 weeks on vacation, visiting family, attending a friend's wedding where I am the best man, and enjoying yummy food. I've prepared my N82 for the flight with lots of Podcasts (Accident Hash, LUGRadio, and some MacBreak Tech) to listen to, and I have the the S60 MobiPocket E-book reader installed. Currently I'm reading a SciFi book based on the Mass Effect video game. Anyway I might not be posting very much during the next 2 weeks and now you know why. But I'll be sure to upload the photos I take during the trip on Flickr. See you in 2 weeks!
I am definitely glad I decided to bring the N95 on my vacation trip to Hawaii. First off I listened to several TWiT Netcasts during the plane and car rides that helped pass the time. My parents rented a car for transportation and a few times I used GPS with the Maps application to find out where we were and find the place where we were trying to get to. The AGPS in the newer N95 firmware helped quickly find the GPS position even while driving in the car.
The S60 Browser in N95 also came in very handy when we arrived to the airport for luggage checkin. You see North West Airlines has a line for customers that pre-checked in on the web and a separate line for those that did not yet checkin. The line for customers that checked in on the web before hand was much shorter than the other line. So my wife and I went and sat down on a bench for a couple minutes while I checked in using the S60 Browser on N95 to checkin on the NWA website. Then we went on the quicker/shorter line since we had checked in already on the web. =)
Another time the S60 Browser came in very handy was when my wife and I wanted to buy tickets for a flight from Maui to Honolulu then back to Maui again for a day trip to Honolulu. There was a WiFi/WLAN access point at the house we rented but nobody had brought a PC, fortunately the N95 Multimedia Computer has WiFi support and a good browser. So I used the WiFi connection and the S60 Browser to book our flight the night before we went to Honolulu. If I didn't have that I would have had to try to find a phone number to call for booking a flight and have to tell them all of my information needed for buying the ticket over the phone, booking the flight on the web is easier for me.
Lastly as you can see from my earlier photo blog posts I took many photos with the N95 during my vacation. I also brought my Panasonic DMC-FZ8 but instead of pulling that out of my backpack most of the time I used the N95, except for those photos where I wanted to use optical zoom or a stronger flash then I used the FZ8.
If you do visit Maui and are staying near or passing by a town named Haiku I strongly recommend stopping at the Hana Hou Cafe located in Haiku, Maui. We ate there twice on our trip. They have delicious food that is reasonably priced and the service is also great. Here are some photos at the Hana Hou Cafe taken with the Nokia N95.
On our first day there we had some unexpected excitement when a grass fire grew out of control and we had to evacuate the house we rented. It had been very dry in Maui with several days without rain. We are all fine don't worry but we did see lots of smoke. We spent the night in a condo away from the fire instead of the house we had rented. Here are some photos I took with the Nokia N95 of the fire and smoke.
